Daring, Experimental, Gifted, Innovative, Hardworking and Passionate are some of the words used to describe Michelle “Miche The Producer” Thomas. She is a musician, arranger, singer, songwriter, audio engineer and music producer who can work with several genres of music, but her passionate focus and niche is creating unique Soca productions, with an aptitude for blending traditional Soca, Reggae and other Caribbean music with various genres to form the perfect marriage of a wonderfully delicious plethora of Caribbean fusion.
Born in Brooklyn, New York to Trinidadian parents, Miche showed an interest in music at a young age so her parents had her attend weekly classical piano lessons. Her Mother was a singer in a band in Trinidad and so Michelle was educated in singing lead and harmonizing. She and siblings were immensely aware of their Trinidadian heritage by having a heavy rotation of Calypso and Soca music playing in the house and Miche’s parents both worked with Trinidad’s Singing Icon Baron, songwriting for him on specific projects in NY. At thirteen, Michelle started playing Saxophone in her Junior High School band and at fifteen joined New York’s All City High School Marching Band and performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in 1988. Michelle showed an interest in steel pan so at the age of seventeen joined one of the leading Steel Pan Orchestra's in Brooklyn, Pan Rebels Steel Orchestra. She automatically took to the instrument and mastered several of its inclinations. When Trinidad’s premier and legendary Panist, arranger and musician, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe came to arrange for the band, he took notice and assigned her to lead some of the sections. Miche learned to arrange under his tutelage over the years and made history in 1998 becoming the first woman to arrange for a Panorama competition in New York with "Clear De Way", co-arranging with two other arrangers. She soon went on to arrange and perform as a drummer with "Women In Steel". Playing/Arranging in a steel band solidified Michelle’s love for Soca/Calypso..
Michelle decided to pivot her music skills to recording and audio engineering taking courses at Basement Recordings in Brooklyn in 1998. While taking course she was hired as student counselor and trainer to run studio labs/midi workshops and steel pan workshops. The following year she was hired by one of the biggest Corporate Events Planning/ Marketing / Entertainment Companies in the country, Drury Design Dynamics. Her official title was Sales and Marketing Coordinator but while there she worked double shift at times in the Audio Department as a part time Assistant Audio Engineer. She honed her skills, recording and editing music, voice-overs and samples for Trade Shows and product launches for DuPont Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacia & UpJohn Pharmaceuticals as well as Lucent Technologies, to name a few. It is there that she also learned the inner workings of an Entertainment/Production entity..
In 2003, she applied those skills to Catalyst Entertainment, LLC, a company that she started up with her musical associates to raise the level of entertainment in her Caribbean culture. She held the title of President and Director of Music Production as well as being the Producer of all of Catalyst's music. In early 2004 she produced an anti-violence song "Pick D' Shells" performed by Benjai and Khari Kill. She also produced and was the main editor on the video project for that track, which reached #3 on Trinidad’s Synergy TVs Video Top Ten Countdown (CIN Cable Network) after just two weeks of airing on the show. For a whole entire year and a half it held a position on the charts in Trinidad in the top 20. It was also nominated for Best Ragga Soca Song at the Soca Awards 2k5. For 2005, Miche has definitely made another musical dent in the industry with a song called "Trinidad" the perfect anthem for Trinidad and Tobago featuring herself, Juicy and Red Lyte. It was also composed, produced and partly written by her and also earning her an individual Soca Award nomination for USA Female Soca Artist of the Year. The song was chosen and licensed by Blue Waters Products Limited of Trinidad and Tobago to be the featured song and instrumental music for their commercials. Michelle then produced Benjai's alternative soca track "Jah In Your Life" which gives soca another sound to soca that up until now is unheard of. That song became part of his repertoire within his performances with Machel Montano’s band HD. The Trinidad Guardian, recognized Michelle as the “The Missy Elliot of Soca” and the “lone female producer of Soca”, both quoted from the article that she they interviewed her for in 2006.
In 2007, Miche and Catalyst officially launched “Soca Rizin Volume 1” in which she makes history as the first woman to produce a Soca Compilation album in its entirety. Soca Rizin is a concept that she has created to show a spectrum of soca with different sides and sounds within the genre such as Caribbean Soul and that she believes has an international appeal. Soca Rizin features some of the leading Caribbean artists such as Michelle Sylvester, Mista Vybe, Gailann, Maximus Dan (MX Prime) and other amazingly talented Caribbean artists. The album is available internationally through digital retailers such as iTunes/Apple Music. All of the songs received regular airplay on radio stations in New York, Canada, Trinidad, London, France, Japan and Germany to name a few and maintain sales on the leading digital platforms to this day. Also in 2007 Michelle was honored at City Hall and was presented with a Proclamation from the City Counsel of New York for all her contributions to the Trinbago Culture as they celebrated their 45th year of Independence. City Counsel Member Dr. Kendall Stewart presented the award that was also signed by New York’s current Attorney General in 2022, Leticia James..
Michelle then took a break to pursue other loves of hers, being an educator, mother and wife. Since 2006 Miche has been a contracted IT Software Instructor for Health Organizations training Physicians, Registered Nurses and other clinicians and non-clinicians in patient care documentation. She has been contracted by some of the major hospitals within the US as an Instructor, Help Desk agent and Instructional Designer somehow balancing that with her family. She never stopped creating as she still released tracks over the years for artists such as Lyrikal and Young Devyn. In late 2021 she was one of the writers on a song entitled “Too Wild” by Julius ft Tallpree (one of Grenada’s top artists). For 2022 and beyond Michelle is on the cusp of a major come back to the Soca world as a producer/writer and in the entertainment realm with Islandmade, LTD, a Trinidad based entertainment company,
